Facebook Helping to Connect in Africa

Now, thanks to facebook, almost half the countries in Africa – a combined population of 635 million – now receive its internet service free of charge. These people may not have free internet on their phones, but they have free facebook. And free facebook is much better than nothing at all. It works, serves to connect, and that is the most basic need.

Facebook's Free Basics initiative, is available in 42 countries, more than half of them in Africa. Africa is divided into a great number of ethnic cultures and this is an integral aspect of the continent's cultural regeneration and ongoing, post-independence nation-building on the continent. There is a general recognition of the need to harness the cultural resources of Africa so as to enrich the process of education, requiring the creation of an enabling environment in many ways.

Faces of Africa

African Culture

The cultures of Africa consist of a mixture of tribes each having their own unique characteristics. A product of the diverse populations that today inhabit the continent of Africa and the African Diaspora, culture in Africa is expressed in its arts and crafts, folklore and religion, clothing, cuisine, music and languages. While African cultures are widely diverse, however, there are also many similarities. For example, the morals that Africans uphold, their love and respect for their culture as well as the strong respect they hold for the aged along with important Kings and Chiefs.

South African Masks

Ritual and ceremonial masks are an especially notable feature of the traditional culture of the peoples of most of Sub-Saharan Africa.

They usually have a spiritual and religious meaning and they are used in ritual dances and social and religious events. A special status is attributed to the artists who create masks and those that wear them in ceremonies. In most cases, mask-making is an art that is passed on from father to son, along with the knowledge of the symbolic meanings conveyed by the masks.
