Selfies by Comorian Women

Among men who can afford it in the Comoros, the preferred form of marriage is polygamy with matrilocal residence. The first marriage is celebrated with great fanfare. Subsequent unions involve much simpler ceremonies. The man with enough money generally establishes two or even more households and will alternate residence between them.

Of course, there is nothing unique to the Comoros in this regard, expect perhaps a certain formalization and acceptance of the arrangement that is somewhat singular.

Faces of Comoros

The Volo Volo Market in the Capital City Moroni

The Volo Volo market is definately worth a visit for handicrafts and souvenirs. The capital city Moroni makes visitors feel like they are in an entirely different world.

A romanticised Arabia where the air is heavy, the capital of Comoros is filled with white-robed men, women in colorful wraps and narrow streets lined with traditional cafes and shops of all kinds. Although there are few traditional tourist attractions, the city's beauty more than makes up for the lack of more established tourist infrastructure. The Comoros are for those who enjoy straying off the beaten path for their selfies.

Perhaps the most interesting district in Moroni to explore is the Medina section, near the Friday Mosque and the port. The winding alleys snake through ancient buildings, and the neighborhood is cooler than other parts of the city because the closeness of the buildings give the place the feeling and sensation of shade.
