Dance and Fellowship in the Congo

The slaves of the Congo tradiationally defied their masters and risked crippling slashes of the whip or worse, the Africans- free and enslaved- by convening in a secret location on the last Sunday of each month to dance, fellowship, and prepare a big meal to share. To their consternation, the slave masters couldn't figure out how the Africans managed to organize themselves and share information about where the meeting would be held each month. The masters tried to eavesdrop on the conversations of their slaves, but found that they could not make sense of what they heard.

The Great Congo Dance of Galapa

On January 17, 1886, a group of young people from the Congo decided to individually disguise themselves and participate in the carnival of Galapa. Most of them were peasants who simply made their presence in the carnivals of their town, and no more. It reappeared in 1907 after several of the founders of the disappeared Congo galapero traveled to the Carnival of Barranquilla and were so impressed by the size and majesty of the Congo Grande that on their return they reorganized the dance and called it the Great Congo Dance of Galapa.
