Its private use was banned in 1834, and again allowed in a regulation of 1854. The flag has the world record of being the oldest national flag used continuously at present.

Denmark

Denmark emerged in the 10th century as a seaworthy nation competent in the struggle for control of the Baltic Sea. Denmark, Sweden and Norway were governed together under the Union of Kalmar, established in 1397 and ending with the Swedish secession in 1523. Denmark and Norway remained under the same monarch until the external forces dissolved the union in 1814; Denmark to inherit the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Iceland. In the 19th century there was a wave of nationalist movements, which were defeated in the Second Schleswig War of 1864. Denmark remained neutral during the First World War. In April 1940, however, a German invasion saw brief military skirmishes while the Danish resistance movement was active from 1943, until the German surrender in May 1945. An industrialized exporter of agricultural products in the second half of the 19th century, Denmark introduced labor market reforms in the early twentieth century that created the basis for the present welfare state model with a highly developed economy.
