Same Sex Marriage is not yet legal in Australia, but hopefully it will be before year's end. It is oppossed by many in the Australian Presbyterian Church among other religious organizations. As throughout most of the West, however, the tide is definately in favor of equality.

Learn About Australian Culture

Australian culture is a sheer delight of diversity and mixture of many different streams, primarily European and indigenous, but many other currents as well, Chinese and Filipino to cite just two examples of many. Most Australians live within 50 kilometers of the coast, and this contributes to their relaxed social lifestyle. An average weekend often includes a swim or surf and/or a barbecue with friends and getting together with family.

Aboriginal Cultures

Throughout Australia, it is said that there are over 200 Aboriginal languages and 600 dialects, but it appears that no writing system for recording the spoken word was developed. Both Austrailan aborigines and Pacific Islanders did, however, use ‘message sticks’, an ancient form of communication that has been used for tens of thousands of years. It is still in use today in some parts of Australia.

The Masks of Oceania

The masks that survive from cultural rituals of ages gone by are some of the best and most illustrative windows into what life was like on the islands of the Pacific throughout thousands of years. Early peoples lacked a writing system, making works on perishable materials, so few records of them exist from centuries gone by. Many objects were created for the practical purpose of use in religious or social ceremonies, or for use in everyday life. A few of them survive.

Cultures and Peoples of Oceania

Oceania is a region made up of thousands of islands throughout the Central and South Pacific Ocean, including Australia, the smallest continent in terms of total land area. Most of Australia and Oceania isin fact under the Pacific; thus, it is aptly named “Oceania”.

Oceania is dominated by the nation of Australia with the other two major landmasses being Zealandia, which includes the country of New Zealand, and the western half of the island of New Guinea, made up of the nation of Papua New Guinea. Oceania also includes three island regions: Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia, which includes the U.S. state of Hawaii.
